Excessive packaging is excessive

If I bought a bottle of ketchup in Canada, I would expect just that: a bottle. It would have a little seal under the cap, but that's about all the extra packaging it would have.

Not so in Japan. Here, when you buy a bottle of ketchup, it comes in a bag.

You would think that a bag would be enough tamper protection, but this is obviously not the case. So it also comes with a little seal under the lid.

I'm not sure what benefits the bag has. It does have all of the branding and labeling information, which is good if you never want to have to look at the nutritional information after you've purchased and opened the product. It's possible that labels do not adhere to the soft, squeezable plastic of the bottle, so maybe this is somewhat necessary if one wants to continue using a bottle that can't be labeled effectively.

Note: Mayonnaise comes in the same kind of bottle.
